Volleyball Finishes Second at Sugarloaf Invitational Posted on September 10th, 2006 by

The Gustavus volleyball team defeated Nebraska Wesleyan 3-1 and then lost to Wartburg 3-1 on the second day of the Sugarload Invitational hosted by St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minn. Jennifer Thelemann and Andrea Kron were named to the All-Tournament team. The Gusties are now 6-3 on the season.

In the first match of the day, Gustavus handed Nebraska Wesleyan its first loss of the tournament with an impressive 3-1 victory (30-27, 32-30, 15-30, 30-22). Andrea Kron (Jr., Cold Spring, Minn.) led the attack with 20 kills in 51 attempts for a .321 attack percentage. Becca Thompson (Sr., Mankato, Minn.) recorded 19 kills and added four block assists. Jennifer Thelemann (Jr., LeSueur, Minn.) added 12 kills and four block assists. Bridget Burtzel (So., Cold Spring, Minn.) recorded 48 set assists and 26 digs, while Emily Klein (So., Red Wing, Minn.) tallied 34 digs.

In the second match of the day, the Gusties lost to tournament champion Wartburg 3-1 (26-30, 17-30, 30-26, 26-30). Andrea Kron led the team in kills once again with 12. Jennifer Thelemann and Meghan Gehring (Fy, Eau Claire, Wis.) each recorded seven block assists.

The Gusties will host Martin Luther College in their home opener on Monday, Sept. 11 at 7:00 pm. The team will then open MIAC play with a home match against Hamline on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
