Volleyball Posts 1-1 Record at First Day of Pikes Peak Invitational Posted on September 1st, 2006 by

The Gustavus volleyball team defeated St. Olaf 3-1 and lost to Colorado College 3-0 on the first day of the Pikes Peak Invitational being played in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Gusties will wrap up the tournament with two games on Saturday.

The Gusties opened the day with an hard-fought 3-1 win over St. Olaf (32-30, 25-30, 30-26, 30-25). Coach Kari Eckheart’s squad displayed a balanced attack as four players registered double-digit kills. Andrea Kron (Cold Spring, Minn./ROCORI) led the way with 18 kills, followed by Jennifer Thelemann (LeSueur, Minn.) and Becca Thompson (Mankato, Minn./West) with 14 each, and Jessica Plemel (Owatonna, Minn.) with 12. Emily Klein (Red Wing, Minn.) recorded 22 digs and Rachelle Jakobs (Montevideo, Minn.) contributed 51 set assists.

In the evening matchup, Gustavus did not fare as well falling to host Colorado College 3-0 (28-30, 25-30, 21-30). Jennifer Thelemann led the team in kills with 12, while Andrea Kron contributed 10. Emily Klein once again led the team in digs with 23, while Rachelle Jakobs recorded 38 set assists.

Gustavus will play Endicott College on Saturday morning at 9:00 am (CST). The Gusties will wrap up the tournament at 11 am either in the third place match or the championship match.
