Men’s Soccer Opens With 0-0 Tie Against Edgewood Posted on September 1st, 2006 by

The Gustavus men’s soccer team opened the 2006 season with a 0-0 double overtime tie with Edgewood College. The match was played in Madison, Wisconsin. The Gusties outshot Edgewood 16-8 and held a 13-3 advantage in corner kicks. Tyler Garry (Sioux Falls, So. Dak./O’Gorman) recorded the shutout in the nets for Gustavus.

Junior midfielder Jeffrey Johnson (Tonka Bay, Minn./Minnetonka) tested Edgewood goalkeeper Ryan Flohr with four shots on goal, but he could not find the back of the net. Senior forward Alex Groth (Waupaca, Wis.) put two shots on net, while junior forward Mike Butterworth (Anchorage, Alaska) added one shot. The Gusties were outshot 4-3 in the first half, but picked up the pace in the second half recording ten shots to Edgewood’s three. Gustavus held a 2-0 shot advantage in the first overtime, while the two teams each put one shot on goal in the second overtime.

Tyler Garry turned in a strong performance in net for the Gusties. Garry turned away a key Edgewood shot in the second half as he snapped up a ball just in front of the Gustavus goal line. Garry made five saves in the match.

Gustavus will now face UW-Whitewater in Whitewater on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm.
