Track and Field Posts Five School Records at Hamline

The Gustavus Adolphus track and field team set a total of five school records, provisionally qualified two more individuals for the NCAA meet and had three others better their provisional qualifying marks Friday at Hamline’s Meet of the UnSaintly in St. Paul. The Gusties are now preparing for the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 12-13 at St. Thomas.

On the women’s side, Ashley Cronen (Sr., Kandiyohi, Minn.) lowered her provisional qualifying mark in the 800-meter run with a third-place school-record time of 2:13.62, while Lisa Brown (Fy., Lake Crystal, Minn.) bettered her mark in the javelin throw with a school-record heave of 136 feet, 3 inches, finishing second behind Minnesota’s Ruby Radocaj (152′ 9″). Carlie Hanson (Jr., Buffalo, Minn.) and Sari Lindeman (SO., Cannon Falls, Minn.) added their names to the list of Gustavus provisional qualifiers Friday with school-record efforts in the 400-meter hurdles and triple jump, respectively. Hanson won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.61, while Lindeman bettered the Gustavus mark in the triple jump by more than a foot with her 37 feet, 8 inch effort. Lindeman finished third.

The Gusties also picked up top-three finishes in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and the 1500-meter run. Kelsey Becker (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) and Funto Okanla (So., St. Paul, Minn.) finished 2-3 in the 100-meter dash with times of :12.87 and :12.90, respectively. Linda Kanne (Fy., Franklin, Minn.) posted a time of :26.33 to finish second in the 200-meter dash, while Mollie Lager (Sr., Robbinsdale, Minn.) finished second in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:51.68. Val Berquam (Jr., Kenyon, Minn.) added a third-place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:39.45.

Vicki Peterson (So., Plymouth, Minn.), Brown, and Heidi Gruenhagen (Sr., New Ulm, Minn.) finished 3-4-5 to a pair of Minnesota throwers in the shot put. Peterson placed third with a toss of 37 feet, 7 1/4 inches, followed by Brown (36′ 11.5″) and Gruenhagen (35′ 10.5″).

Tanner Miest (Jr., New London, Minn.)
continued his streak of wins outdoors in the 110-meter hurdles, winning the event for the fifth straight meet. Miest lowered his provisional qualifying mark to a school-record :14.64 with his win. Tyler Geyen (Fy., Watertown, Minn.) finished third with a time of :15.36.

Andy Klaers (Jr., Delano, Minn.) and Mike Schmidt (Sr., Rogers, Minn.) provided the only other top-three individual finishes on the men’s side. Klaers finishing second in the discus throw with an effort of 159 feet, 2 inches, while Schmidt was third in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 8.75 inches.

Ben Treichel (So., Webster, Wis.)
finished fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of :11.44, clipping teammate Chad Arlt (Fr., St. Michael, Minn.) at the line. Arlt ran a time of :11.49. Darrin Mays (Sr., Minnesota Lake, Minn.) finished fifth in the shot put (47′ 5.25″) and Luke Weyandt (Jr., Ham Lake, Minn.) added a fifth-place finish in the javelin throw (137′ 5″).
