Softball Team Sweeps St. Olaf Posted on April 4th, 2006 by

The Gustavus women’s softball team swept St. Olaf 8-2 and 12-2 on Tuesday afternoon in Northfield. Centerfielder Mary Furlong led the Gusties as she went 5-for-8 at the plate and scored four runs. Joyce DeWitz was the winning pitcher in game one and Sarah Manke was the winning pitcher in game two. Gustavus improves to 9-5 overall and 3-1 in the MIAC.

In game one, Mary Furlong sparked the Gusties with three hits in four at-bats while scoring a run and driving in a run. Abby Bernstein also had a big game with two hits in two at-bats and driving in three runs. Gustavus scored three times in the first inning and then added two runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth. St. Olaf scored one run in the fourth and one in the fifth. Joyce DeWitz was the winning pitcher for Gustavus as she allowed one hit and one earned run in five innings on the mound. Bree Lindenberg pitched the final two innings allowing one hit and one earned run.

In game two, the Gusties pounded out 15 hits on their way to a 12-2 win in five innings. Audrey Lenoch was the hitting star with four hits in four at-bats while driving in three runs. Emily Klein contributed three hits including two doubles, while Briana Hewitt drove in three runs with two doubles. Gustavus carried a 6-2 lead into the fifth inning and then exploded for six runs to pull away for the 12-2 win. First year pitcher Sarah Manke earned the win on the mound as she scattered four hits and allowed two earned runs in five innings of work. She walked three batters and struck out six.

Gustavus stroked nine doubles in the two games and stole seven bases. Briana Hewitt led the team with three doubles, while Mary Furlong and Audrey Lenoch each stole two bases.

The Gusties will play their home opener on Thursday against Macalester. Game time is 4:00 pm.
