Women’s Hockey Loses to #1 Middlebury 3-0 Posted on February 3rd, 2006 by

The Gustavus women’s hockey team lost 3-0 to top ranked Middlebury on Friday afternoon in Middlebury, Vermont. The Gusties outshot the Panthers 26-20, but Middlebury scored a goal in each period to claim the victory. Gustavus will close out its East Cost trip with a game against Williams College on Saturday at Middlebury College.

The Gusties put themselves at a disadvantage by taking three penalties in the first period, however they were able to kill all three penalties. The Panthers took a 1-0 lead when Annmarie Cellino scored at 17:38 of the first period. Emily Quizon was credited with the assist. Middlebury led 1-0 after the first 20 minutes.

Gustavus managed to stay in the game with some good defense and goaltending through most of the second period, but Middlebury scored an important second goal on the power play with :12 left in the period. Shannon Tarrant scored the goal and Cellino was credited with the assist. The Gusties were unable to convert on three power play opportunities in the period.

Middlebury took its 2-0 lead into the third period. Gustavus put good pressure on the Panthers and had several good scoring opportunities, but could not get the puck past Middlebury goaltender Kate Kogut. Coach Mike Carroll pulled the Gustie goaltender the final 2:38 of the game and Middlebury picked up an open net goal by Annmarie Cellino at the 17:22 mark.

All three of Middlebury’s goals were scored in the final two minutes of each period.

Both Gustavus and Middlebury were whistled for five penalties in the contest. The Panthers converted on one of its five opportunities, while the Gusties were 0-for-5 with the player advantage.
