Women’s Hockey Falls to Plattsburgh State 3-2 in Battle of National Powers Posted on February 2nd, 2006 by

The Gustavus women’s hockey team suffered a disappointing 3-2 loss to #2 Plattsburgh State in Plattsburgh, New York on Thursday night. The Gusties. who are ranked #3 nationally, scored two goals in the first two minutes of the game, but could not hold on to the lead as the Cardinals rallied for the one-goal victory. Molly Doyle and Jessica Doig scored for Gustavus.

Coach Mike Carroll’s got off to a torid start in the contest as Molly Doyle lit the lamp at the :33 second mark giving the Gusties a 1-0 lead. Assists were credited to Kelly Crandall and Mari Gunderson. Gustavus extended its lead to 2-0 just :90 seconds later as Jessica Doig took a pass from Andrea Peterson and beat Plattsburgh State goaltender Breanne Doyle at the 1:48 mark. The Gusties took a 2-0 lead into the lockerroom despite being outshot 8-5 by the Cardinals.

Plattsburgh State gave the Gusties a dose of their own medicine scoring a goal just :14 seconds into the second period. The goal by Gina Kozar cut the lead to 2-1. Gustavus held on to its slim lead through most of the period, however the Cardinals’ Valen Timmons evened the score at 2-2 with a goal at the 17:15 mark. The second period ended with the score knotted at 2-2. Plattsburgh State outshot the Gusties 10-8 and held an 18-13 lead in shots through the first 40 minutes of play.

Six minutes into the third period, Plattsburgh tallied what would turn out to be the gamewinner when Gina Kozar scored her second goal of the game at the 6:16 mark. The Cardinals would give the Gusties several chances to get back in the game with four consecutive penalties over the next nine minutes of play, however, Gustavus, which leads the nation in power play percentage, could not take convert on any of the four penalties. The Gusties even had a 5-on-3 advantage for :90 seconds midway through the period. Gustavus finished the game 0-for-8 on the power play, while Plattsburgh State was 0-for-7 with the advantage.

Kitty Hurley suffered just her second loss of the season in the nets. She turned away 20 of the 23 shots she faced. Breanne Doyle, who improved her mark to 16-1-0, made 20 saves for the Cardinals.

The Gusties fall to 14-2-1 on the season, while Plattsburgh State improves to 19-1-0 overall. Gustavus will now face #1 ranked Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont tomorrow (Friday) at 3:00 pm (CST).
