Men’s Basketball Claims Impressive 78-42 Win at Saint Mary’s Posted on January 4th, 2006 by

The Gustavus men’s basketball team bounced back from its disappointing loss at Carleton on Monday night with an impressive 78-42 win over Saint Mary’s in Winona on Wednesday night. Senior wing Adam TeBrake led all scorers with 17 points as the Gusties improved to 8-2 overall and 3-2 in the MIAC.

The Gusties trailed 7-6 three minutes into the game, however Mark Hanson’s squad used a 10-0 run to take a 16-7 lead. Gustavus would not trail the rest of the night. The Gusties built their lead to as many as 20 points at 34-14, but a Cardinal basket with :32 left in the half, sent Gustavus into the lockerroom with an 18-point lead (34-16). Adam TeBrake had eight points in the first 20 minutes to lead all scorers. The Gusties shot 61.5 percent from the field (16-26).

Gustavus kept the pressure on early in the second half outscoring Saint Mary’s 16-4 in the first five minutes of play to take a 30-point lead at 50-20. The Gustie onslaught would continue as the team extended its lead to as many as 47 points at 75-28 with 4:24 left on the clock. The Cardinals outscored Gustavus 14-3 the rest of the to make the final score 78-42.

The Gusties made an impressive 63.5 percent of their shots from the field (33-52) and shot 90.9 percent from the free throw line (9-10). Saint Mary’s struggled from the field making 34.6 percent of its shots (18-52).

Gustavus placed three players in double figures in the game including TeBrake with 17, Andrew Olson with 11 and Trevor Wittwer with 10.

The Gusties will return home to face Bethel on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
