Women’s Swimming and Diving Downs Saint Mary’s, 146-71; Finishes Second at St. Kate’s

The Gustavus women’s swimming and diving team wrapped up a successful weekend Saturday with a 146-71 dual win at Saint Mary’s and a second place finish in a quadrangular at St. Kate’s. Gustavus returns to the pool at the University of Minnesota Invite November 18-19. The Gusties will also host Concordia-Moorhead in a dual November 19.

Dual at Saint Mary’s
Four swimmers picked up three event wins Saturday as the Gustavus women’s swimming and diving team forged a 146-71 win over Saint Mary’s in Winona. Sophomores Sara Pfau (Bismarck, N.D.) and Maggie Luke (Stillwater, Minn.) and first-year Danielle Harms (Sun Prairie, Wis.) each paired a relay win with two individual event wins, while fellow first-year Britta Nelson (Morrison, Colo.) swam on both winning relays and added a win in the 50 freestyle.

The 200 yard medley team of Pfau, junior Heidi Johnson (Maple Grove, Minn.), Nelson and first-year Britney Manthey (Rochester, Minn.) opened the meet with a victory in a time of 2:05.02. Pfau would later add victories in the 200 individual medley (2:19.89) and the 100 backstroke (1:06.28), while Manthey added a win in the 100 freestyle.

Maggie Luke picked up wins in the 200 freestyle (2:08.92) and the 100 butterfly (1:05.72), while Danielle Harms was victorious in both the 500 freestyle (5:56.75) and the 1000 freestyle (12:08.12). Luke and Harms would also team up with Nelson and first-year Carly Ernst (Lincoln, Neb.) to take the win in the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:53.02.

Quadrangular at St. Kate’s
The Gustavus women’s swimming and diving team took only one event title at the St. Kate’s quadrangular Saturday but came away with a second place finish. Carleton won the meet with 214 points, besting the Gusties’ total of 169. Hamline and St. Kate’s finished with 135 and 96 points, respectively.

Junior Yoshi Ludwig (St. Peter, Minn.) was the lone Gustavus winner, taking the win in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:22.11. Ludwig also teamed with sophomore Danielle Gergen (Hastings, Minn.) and first-years Emily Amundsen (Plymouth, Minn.) and Erica Hickey (Great Falls, Mont.) for a second place finish in the 200 medley relay.

First-year Amy Erickson (Shorewood, Minn.) took second in the 1000 freestyle, while seniors Katie Haynes (Duluth, Minn.) and Kara Yette (Shakopee, Minn.) finished second in the 200 backstroke and 1-meter diving events, respectively.

Gustavus returns to the pool at the University of Minnesota Invite November 18-19. The Gusties will also host Concordia-Moorhead in a dual November 19.
