Gustavus Adolpus College junior cornerback Brian Evans (Gaylord, Minn.) intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble to help the Gusties limit #21 ranked Wheaton to 279 yards of total offense on Saturday in a 23-16 defeat in St. Peter.

Evans’ interception, which came in the second quarter, was grabbed at the Thunder 45 yard line and returned to the Wheaton 29. Evans made his second big play of the game late in the third quarter with Gustavus holding on to a 16-9 lead. On a first-and-ten from the Gustavus 29 yard line, Evans hit Wheaton quarterback Jeremy Chupp, forcing a fumble which Evans recovered at the Gustavus 32 yard line. Evans contributed two tackles in the game (one solo) and also broke up two passes.

The Gusties led nationally ranked Wheaton for the majority of the game before giving up two late touchdowns and losing 23-16.

Gustavus, which is currently 0-2 this season, will play Hamline in St. Paul on Saturday.
