Volleyball to Host Gustavus Classic Posted on September 5th, 2005 by

The Gustavus Adolphus volleyball team will open its home schedule by hosting the Gustavus Classic September 9-10 in St. Peter. Action on Gus Young Court at Lund Center will begin at 4 p.m. Friday, September 9 as Gustavus faces Viterbo University. Carleton will face Martin Luther College on an adjacent court at the same time. Northwestern (Minn.) and Cornell College will also be in action throughout the weekend.

Action will be intense as the field contains one reigning conference champion (Carleton) as well as another (Cornell) that finished runner-up, as well as the Gusties. Gustavus is looking to get back on track after starting the season 1-3 overall following play at the Boxer Kickoff Invitational in Forest Grove, Ore. Carleton is the defending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion and is off to a 3-1 record in 2005. Cornell College tied for second in the Iowa Intercollegiate Conference last season and was runner-up in the IIAC Tournament to perennial IIAC and national power Central (Iowa). Viterbo finished 7-27 in 2004, but is already 2-1 in 2005. Martin Luther and Northwestern (Minn.) finished tied for third place in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.
