Men’s Golf Places Third at Gustie Spring Classic

The Gustavus men’s golf team placed third in the Gustie Spring Invite which concluded on Tuesday afternoon in Jordan, Minn. The Gusties compiled a 54-hole score of 299-295-298–892, seven strokes behind the winner Saint John’s University (285-298-302–885).

The final round of the Gustie Spring Classic was played on Tuesday, April 19 at the Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan, Minn. The Gustavus men’s golf team compiled a 54-hole total of 299-295-298–892 to place third out of 14 teams at the tournament. Saint John’s University won the classic with a final score of 285-298-302–885, while Winona State University placed second with a final score of 300-299-288–887.

Winona State’s Troy Merritt earned the individual medalist honors with a 54-hole total of 74-72-66–212. Merritt’s 66 on Tuesday was the 18-hole low score for this year’s competition. Saint John’s Kyle Fredrickson placed second with a score of 69-74-71–214, while Derek Pirkl from UW- Eau Claire and Mike Eisele from Luther College tied for third place with a final score of 217.

The top three performers for Gustavus were Clayton Johnson, Brady Hoffman and Eric Tone. Johnson tied for eighth place with a final score of 75-72-74-221 to lead the Gusties. Brady Hoffman and Eric Tone tied for 11th place with a final 54-hole total of 222.

Gustavus will return to action on Sunday, April 24 at the Saint John’s University Invitational. The 36-hole event will take place at the Monticello Country Club.
