Women’s Track & Field Places Second at Washington University Select Meet

The Gustavus women’s track & field team placed second at the Washington University Select Meet in St. Louis, Missouri. Twenty-six different student-athletes scored for Gustavus to compile 144 points, just one point behind meet champion Central College.

The Gustavus Adolphus College women’s track and field team placed second at the Washington University Select Meet on Saturday, April 9 in St. Louis, Missouri. Twenty-six different Gustavus student-athletes scored at the meet to compile 144 points, just one point behind meet champion Central College.

In the field events, first-year Shanna Dawson (Fairmont, Minn.) led the Gusties with two top three finishes. Dawson placed second in the pole vault clearing a height of 11′ and placed third in the long jump with a distance of 16′ 3.25″.

Gustavus placed second through fourth in the triple jump to earn valuable points. First-year Sari Lindeman (Cannon Falls, Minn.) placed second (35′ 9.5″), junior Kalee Schrupp (Becker, Minn.) placed third (33′ 7.25″) and first-year Maika Leier (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) placed fourth (33′ 6.75″).

In the running events, junior Kourtney Joyce (Wadena, Minn.) was the lone Gustie to claim an event title. Joyce recorded a time of 18:21.69 to place first in the 5,000-meter run. Senior Nichole Petersen (Marshall, Minn.) placed second just five-seconds behind Joyce (18:26.65). Senior Tasha Pike (Rochester, Minn.) placed fourth (19:02.91) and sophomore Hailey Harren (Cold Spring, Minn.) placed sixth (19:04.52).

The Gusties claimed four top-ten spots in the 800-meter run. Sophomore Krista Cruse (Hastings, Minn.) led the way with a third place finish (2:24.12), senior Ashley Farbo (Buffalo, Minn.) placed fourth (2:25.87), sophomore Heidi Bulfer (Fairmont, Minn.) placed fifth (2:26.65) and junior Mollie Lager (Robbinsdale, Minn.) placed seventh (2:27.49).

Other top finishers were senior Ali Cordie (Sartell, Minn.), sophomore Carlie Hanson (Buffalo, Minn.), junior Ashley Cronen (Kandiyohi, Minn.) and first-year Karla Smith (Minneapolis, Minn.). Cordie placed third in the 400-meter hurdles (1:06.86), Hanson placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:06.98), Cronen placed fourth in the 400-meter dash (59.41), and Smith placed fifth in the 100-meter dash (13.09).

The Gusties will return to action next Saturday when they host the fifth annual Lee Krough Invitational.
