Women’s Hockey Defeats #10 Williams 6-1 Posted on January 8th, 2005 by

The Gustavus women’s hockey team jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back in claiming an important 6-1 win over Williams College in River Falls, Wisconsin. Molly Doyle scored two goals and picked up one assist to lead the Gusties.

Gustavus took a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal by Kelly Crandall at 7:28 of the first period. Molly Doyle and Laura Stypulkowski were credited with assists. The Gusties, which outshot the Eph”s 15-7 in the period, held a 1-0 lead at the break.

The Gusties extended their lead to 3-0 on goals by Andrea Peterson at 9:05 and Molly Doyle at 10:29. Doyle’s goal was short-handed. Kelly Crandall was credited with the assist on Doyle’s goal. Gutavus took its 3-0 lead into the lockerroom at the end of the second period. The Gusties outshot Williams 14-7 in the second period.

Gustavus broke the game open three goals in the first ten minutes of the third period. Molly Doyle scored her second goal of the game at 4:03 to make the score 4-0. Abby Randall extended the lead to 5-0 with a power-play goal at 7:00 and Tanna Tuomie scored the sixth and final goal at the 9:30 mark.

Williams scored its lone goal of the game at 11:40 of the third period. The goal was a power play goal and it was the first power play goal that Gustavus has allowed this season. The Gusties have now allowed one power-play goal in 51 penalty kill situations.

Kitty Hurley picked up the win in the nets for Gustavus. Hurley turned away 20 shots. Denise McCulloch suffered the loss for Williams. McCulloch recorded 34 saves in 47 minutes of play.

The Gusties outshot Williams 38-21 in the match.

Gustavus improves to 8-1-1 on the season, while Williams falls to 4-6-0. The Gusties, who are rated #7 in Division III, will play #3 UW-Stevens Point on Sunday at 3:30 pm.
