Men’s Soccer Extends Unbeaten Streak to 25 Posted on September 25th, 2004 by

The second ranked Gustavus men’s soccer team defeated sixth ranked St. John’s 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn. The Gusties scored a goal in each half to extend their unbeaten streak to 25 games.

The Gusties took the lead in the 17th minute of the first half. Neil Nelson got around a Johnnie defender on the left-side of the field and served a ball across the goal mouth. Matt Broin got on the end of it and shot the ball on frame. The St. John’s goalkeeper Eric Prawalsky got his hands on the shot but was unable to keep the ball out of the net.

The Johnnies put the Gusties under pressure in the second half but were unable to capitolize on their opportunities. Jeff Aasness gave the Gusties an insurance goal in the 87th minute. The ball was served from the right-side of the field into the penalty box. Chad Ransom redirected the cross with his head back across the goalmouth to Aasness. The junior striker fired the shot into the back of the net to make it 2-0 in favor of the Gusties.

Gustavus goalkeeper Nate Hitch made two saves and recorded his fourth shutout and fourth win of the season.

The Gusties improve to 7-0-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the MIAC and will be back in action on Tuesday, September 27 against St. Mary’s in St. Peter, Minn.
