The Gustavus women’s tennis team will take part in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional this weekend at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. THe Gusties Lauren Hom and Kara Smiley are seeded #1 in the doubles draw. Hom is seeded #2 in the singles draw. The singles and doubles winners will advance to the ITA Small College Championships in Fort Myers, Florida, Oct. 14-17. Following is a release about the tournament from Luther College:

Luther College Hosts Wilson/ITA Midwest Tennis Championships Sept. 24-26

Luther College will be hosting one of the 57 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships played across the country over the next two weeks Sept. 24-26.

The Wilson/ITA Midwest Women’s Championships at Luther will feature the top NCAA Division III schools in the region. The singles and doubles champions from this weekend’s tournament advance to the Oct. 14-17 ITA National Small College Championships at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers.

The ITA National Small College Championships began in 1986 and annually crowns men’s and women’s singles and doubles national champions in each of the ITA’s four small college divisions (NCAA Division s II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College) during the month of October.

Sixteen teams will begin play on the Luther College tennis courts on Sept. 24, at 9:00 a.m. The ITA Midwest Championships will consist of a 68 player singles tournament and 36 team doubles tournament.

The top four seeds of the singles tournament are #1 Elizabeth Maclellan — Wheaton College (IL), #2 Lauren Hom — Gustavus Adolphus College (MN), #3 Christin Tiegs — the College of St. Benedict’s (MN), and #4 Angie Riedel — University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

The top four seeds of the doubles tournament are #1 Lauren Hom/Kara Smiley — Gustavus Adolphus College, #2 Lyndsay Palen/Marla Menne — Gustavus Adolphus College, #3 Jenni White/Jaimee Gaard — Gustavus Adolphus College, and #4 Angie Riedel/Erica Schmelzer — UW-La Crosse.
