2004 Men’s Golf Preview Posted on September 8th, 2004 by

Last year, the Gustavus men’s golf team ran the table winning the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) title in the fall and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) title in the spring. However, this year the Gusties will have a completely different look as only one player from last year’s NCAA Championship squad returns.

Brady Hoffman (Senior, Owatonna, Minn.) is the lone player returning from the NCAA Championship team. Head Coach Scott Moe will look to him for leadership. “Brady knows what it took to win the national title and understands how important each shot is throughout a round. His experience is invaluable and he’ll be looked to for leadership from day one.” Other key returnees are Jon Hagedorn (Junior, Blue Earth, Minn.) and Erik Tone (Sophomore, Willmar, Minn.). Hagedorn was an all-conference player for the Gusties in 2002 and has valuable tournament experience. Coach Moe felt that Tone has had a solid summer and has the potential to break into the line up this fall. Clayton Johnson (Junior, Anoka, Minn.), a transfer from Minneapolis Community College, is also expected to have an impact this season. Johnson placed in the top five at nationals for Minneapolis Community College the past two years.

The Gusties will face conference rivals St. John’s and St. Thomas in every tournament this fall. Gustavus will open the year at the St. John’s Invitational on September 18-19. Coach Moe’s squad will then compete in the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational on September 26-27 and will host the Twin Cities Classic on October 2-4. The UW-Eau Claire Invite and the Twin Cities Classic will be great tests for the Gusties as they will compete against the top seven teams in the region at both events. Gustavus will wrap up the season at the conference tournament on October 9-10 in search of its third consecutive conference title.
