The Gustavus men’s golf team shot a sizzling even par round of 288 to jump into first place after the second day of the NCAA Championships being held in Redlands, California. The Gusties hold an eight-shot advantage over host Redlands.
Luke Benoit led the second day charge with a one-under par 71. Benoit birdied two of the final four holes to record his sub-par round. He is in a tie for fifth place individually.
Neil Johnson continued his stellar play with his second consecutive even par round. Johnson, who had three birdies and three bogies in his round, is in a tie for second place individually with a 72-hole total of 72-72-144.
Freshman Chase Thonvold fired and even par round of 72, while junior Brady Hoffman a one-over par score of 73. Thonvold posted three birdies and three bogies including a two-under par 34 on the front nine. Hoffman’s round included five birdies, three bogies and a triple bogey. He posted a triple bogey six on the eighth hole and finished the front with a three-over 39, but rallied to shoot a two-under 34 on the back nine.
Senior Brent Borgstahl was the in the unusual position of posting a solid three-over par round of 75 and not having his score count. He posted a one-under 35 on the front, but dropped to a four-over 40 on the back nine. Borgstahl’s 36-hole total of 72-75-147 (+3) puts him in 25th place individually.
Gustavus will begin the third round at 8:00 am (Pacific Standard Time). Brent Borgstahl will lead the way at 8:00 am followed by Brady Hoffman at 8:10, Chase Thonvold at 8:20, Luke Benoit at 8:30 and Neil Johnson at 8:40. The Gusties will play with Redlands and Ohio Wesleyan.
