Women’s Hockey defeats St. Mary’s 4-1

The Gustavus Adolphus women’s hockey team defeated St. Mary’s University 4-1 Friday night in Winona, Minn. Ann Katz scored two goals for the Gusties, while Abby Randall and Jess Brandanger contributed one goal each.

The Gustavus women’s hockey team defeated St. Mary’s University 4-1 Friday night in Winona, Minn. The Gusties improve to 13-5 overall and 9-2 in the MIAC, while the Cardinals fall to 9-6-1 overall and 8-5 in the MIAC.

St. Mary’s jumped out to an early lead with a goal from Emily Kearns just :52 seconds into the game. The Gusties answered back at the 6:40 mark on a power-play goal by Ann Katz. Laura Stypulkowski and Abby Randall assisted on the goal. Katz extended the lead to 2-1 with a short-handed goal at the 12:23 mark. Abby Randall’s power-play goal just one minute later gave the Gusties their third goal of the period and allowed Coach Mike Carroll’s squad to take a 3-1 lead into the lockerroom.

Jess Brandanger wrapped up the scoring at 11:31 of the second period. Katie Deschneau and Ashley Elliot were credited with assists on the goal.

Goaltender Kristen Setterstrom made 11 saves on the evening and improved 7-2 for the Gusties. Nikki Jung faced 35 shots and made 28 saves in the nets for the Cardinals.

Gustavus and St. Mary’s will wrap up the series tomorrow at Don Roberts Rink in St. Peter, Minn. The Gusties lead the all-time series against the Cardinals 13-5-3.
