Cross Country Set For Running Of The Cows Posted on September 30th, 2016 by

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s and women’s cross country squads are set to travel to Northfield, Minn. Saturday to compete in the Running of the Cows at the Carleton Arboretum on the campus of Carleton College.

The women will begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by the men at 11:30 a.m.

Last week the Gustavus men’s cross country team entered the USTFCCCA Division III National Coaches’ Poll for the first time since November of 1990, ranking No. 23 in the Week Two NCAA Coaches’ Poll.

In the latest National Coach’s Poll, the men rank No. 28, as of September 28. The Black and Gold are also ranked No. 4 out of 10 in the Central Region rankings. MIAC foe St. Olaf College sits at No. 1.

The Gusties most recently competed at the St. Olaf Invitational two weekends ago. The men took fifth place out of 20 teams, scoring 117 points. 

Thomas Knobbe (Sr., Decorah, Iowa) continued to impress as he placed third overall with a time of 25:47, 20 seconds behind the winner Darin Lau of UW-Eau Claire. Evan Jones (Sr., Pella, Iowa) was the second Gustie to cross the line, finishing in 14th place with a time of 26:15. Carston Dammann (Sr., Lake City, Minn.) took 20th in 26:31, Alex Wischnack (So., Norwood, Minn.) placed 31st in 26:55, andAlex Fredrickson (Sr., Victoria, Minn.) was the fifth Gustie to finish, taking 58th in 27:37.

The Gustie women took 11th place out of 23 teams, scoring 371 points. Sadie Novak-Klug (Jr., Waseca, Minn.) paced the Gusties with a 39th place finish, crossing the line in 24:12. Olivia Rosenow (Jr., Maple Grove, Minn.) and Kitty O’Connell (Fy., Edina, Minn.) came in next for the Gusties, taking 103rd and 104th place, respectively, with times of 25:12 and 25:14. Gabriela Passmore (Fy., Mapleton, Minn.) was close behind in 106th place with a time of 25:16. Lydia Hayes (Jr., Decorah, Iowa) was the fifth Gustie runner to cross the line, taking 114th place in 25:25.

A year ago at Carleton’s Running of the Cows, the men’s team earned a first place finish while the Gustie women tallied a fourth place finish. The Gustie men placed three runners inside the top-5, totaling 40 points. Knobbe finished with a time of 25:40.7, good for a third place finish. The women totaled 90 points to place fourth out of six teams.
