Baseball Walks Off a Winner Over Carthage
Brice Panning (Jr., Hamburg, Minn.) played the role of hero Thursday, driving in the game-winning run in walk-off fashion Thursday for the Gustavus baseball team in a 3-2 win over Carthage. The Gusties are now 3-3 overall with one day remaining in their trip to Tucson.
Baseball Loses 6-4 to Wabash in Tucson
The Gustavus baseball team Wednesday night dropped a 6-4 decision to Wabash at the Tucson Invitational, moving to 2-3 overall. The Gusties were able to erase a three-run deficit to tie the game in the fifth, but Wabash answered with three more runs to secure the win.
Baseball Loses Contest to Aurora Tuesday Night 7-2
After a day off on its spring break trip, the Gustavus baseball team fell to Aurora University on Tuesday night 7-2. With the loss the Gusties fall to 2-2 on the year.
2019 Baseball Season Preview
Four years into the current coaching regime, the Gustavus baseball team has its eyes set on something that hasn’t been achieved since head coach Brad Baker ’80 was a student-athlete. With a balance of experienced veterans and talented underclassmen, the Gusties have high expectations in 2019, aiming for their first MIAC championship in 39 years.
Four Gusties Named MIAC Football First Team All-Conference
The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference released its football postseason awards Tuesday and four Gustavus student-athletes were named First Team All-Conference – Matt Berkner (Sr., Sleepy Eye, Minn.), Brayton Finch (Jr., Mount Morris, Ill.), Brice Panning (Jr., Hamburg, Minn.), and Michael Veldman (Jr., Becker, Minn.).
Offensive Outburst Guides Football Over Carleton 62-28
The Gustavus football team Saturday afternoon scored early and often, cruising to a 62-28 victory over Carleton for its fourth consecutive victory, improving to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in the MIAC. The Knights fall to 3-6 overall and 2-5 in the league.
Stout Defense, Strong First Half Propel Football to 27-14 Homecoming Win Over Concordia
A strong defensive performance with a lopsided time of possession resulted in the Gustavus football team defeating Concordia 27-14 Saturday afternoon on its Homecoming. The Gusties controlled possession for more than 41 minutes and held the MIAC’s top rushing attack to a pedestrian 20 yards on 23 carries. The Gusties snap a three-game losing streak to improve to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the MIAC, while the Cobbers drop to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the league.
Football Loses to No. 9 Saint John’s 45-13
In the first home night game since 1988, the Gustavus football team dropped a 45-13 decision to No. 9 Saint John’s on Saturday night at Saint Peter High School’s Floyd B. Johnson Memorial Field. The Gusties drop to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the MIAC, while the Johnnies move to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the league.
Football Falters Late, Drops Home Opener to UW-Stout in Overtime 24-23
Despite holding a 17-0 lead though 43 minutes of play Saturday, the Gustavus football team suffered a deflating 24-23 overtime loss to UW-Stout in the home opener. The Blue Devils scored the game-tying touchdown with eight seconds remaining in regulation, scored a touchdown on their first overtime possession, and blocked the would-be game-tying extra point to complete the improbable comeback.
Football Bounces Back After Slow Start, Defeats Martin Luther 32-20 in Season Opener
It took some time for the Gustavus football team to find its footing Saturday in the season opener at Martin Luther College, but after trailing by two at halftime the Gusties made the necessary adjustments to outscore the Knights 14-0 in the final 30 minutes and came out on top 32-20.
