Men’s Basketball Cruises To 83-68 Win At Macalester

The Gustavus men’s basketball team improved to 2-0 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on Saturday with an 83-68 victory at Macalester College. The Gusties never trailed throughout the game and took advantage of their opportunities from the free throw line, making 20-of-22.

Second Half Surge Pushes Men’s Basketball Past Concordia In MIAC Opener

An 18-1 run midway through the second half provided more than enough of an advantage for the Gustavus men’s basketball team Wednesday night in its home and Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener against Concordia as the Gusties cruised to a 92-75 victory at Gus Young Court. The victory is the first for the Gusties early in the season as they improve to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the MIAC, while the Cobbers fall to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Men’s Basketball Drops Season Opener 81-60 At Buena Vista

The Gustavus men’s basketball team opened its season Friday with an 81-60 non-conference loss at Buena Vista University. The Gusties kept the score close for most of the second half, but an 11-point run by the Beavers in the final three minutes sealed the victory for the home team.

New-Look Men’s Basketball Squad Tips Off Season Friday

Head Coach Mark Hanson is in his 27th season at the helm of the Gustavus men’s basketball team and his squad is looking to improve on an eighth place finish in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference a year ago when it went 9-11 in the league. Last season’s team posted a 12-13 overall record, although Gustavus proved to be competitive while keeping a majority of games within single digits. The 2016-17 MIAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll ranked Gustavus seventh.

Men’s Basketball Ends Season On A High Note, Defeats Carleton 67-58

With its playoff hopes dashed and only pride and respect to play for, the Gustavus men’s basketball team went out on a high note, defeating Carleton 67-58 on Saturday, sending its six seniors off with a victory in their final game wearing the Black and Gold. The Gusties cap the season with a 12-13 overall record and 9-11 mark in the MIAC, ending the year in eighth place.

Men’s Basketball Topples Saint John’s 63-62 In Final Seconds

To say the past four games for the Gustavus men’s basketball team have been exciting would just scratch the surface of describing them. Two overtime games and another decided on the last shot led to a similar ending Wednesday as the Gusties defeated Saint John’s 63-62, taking the lead with four seconds on the clock on a Brody Ziegler (Sr., Mankato, Minn.) put-back, and then watching the Johnnies’ final shot at the buzzer clank off the rim. The victory improves the Gusties to 11-13 overall and 8-11 in the MIAC, while the Johnnies fall to 17-7 overall and 12-7 in the league.

Men’s Basketball Erases 20-Point Deficit, Defeats Hamline 101-91 In Overtime

Saturday afternoon’s MIAC men’s basketball game against Hamline University didn’t start well for Gustavus as the visiting Pipers raced to a double-digit advantage, leading by as much as 19 points in the first half. Hamline took a 20-point lead in the second, it’s largest of the game, but the Gusties showed pride and determination to erase that deficit and tie the game 74-74 with 3:19 left in regulation. Trailing 83-80 after a timeout and eight seconds on the game clock, Chris Narum (Sr., Eagan, Minn.) played the role of the hero as he sunk an off-balance fade-away three to tie the game with just five seconds on the clock, sending it to overtime. Having lost their previous two overtime contests this season, the Gusties flipped the script and went on to claim a 101-91 victory to improve to 10-13 overall and 7-11 in the MIAC.

Men’s Basketball Edged By Saint John’s 87-83

Despite leading midway through the second half, the Gustavus men’s basketball team was unable to hold on to the advantage, while sending Saint John’s to the free throw line 26 times in an 87-83 loss. With the loss, the Gusties fall to 5-10 overall and 2-8 in the MIAC, while the Johnnies improve 12-3 overall and 7-3 in the league.

Second Half Comeback Not Enough, Men’s Basketball Falls 82-74 To Concordia

The Gustavus men’s basketball team erased a double-digit deficit in the second half Saturday afternoon against Concordia, but was unable to hold on to the lead en route to an 82-74 loss at Gus Young Court. The defeat moves the Gusties to 4-6 overall and 1-4 in the MIAC.

Men’s Basketball Starts MIAC Play With 69-57 Victory Over Saint Mary’s

The Gustavus men’s basketball team scored the first basket of Wednesday night’s game against Saint Mary’s University and never relinquished the lead, resulting in a 69-57 victory to begin MIAC play. With the win, the Gusties improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
