Sarah Swanson Named MIAC Women’s Indoor Field Athlete-Of-The-Year

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its indoor track and field awards Thursday and Gustavus throw specialist Sarah Swanson (Sr., Fairbanks, Alaska) was named Women’s Field Athlete-of-the-Year. Swanson becomes the first Gustie to earn the award since Janey Helland in 2011.

Track & Field Teams Both Take Eighth At MIAC Indoor Championships

The Gustavus men’s and women’s track & field teams put a wrap on the indoor season Saturday at the MIAC Championships. Both team placed eighth as the men scored 48 points and the women 48.5 points. St. Thomas won the conference title for both the men and women.

The Gustavus men’s and women’s track & field teams are complete with day one at the MIAC Indoor Championships and both teams boasted finishes that reached the podium, including a sweep in the weight throw. After day one, the women are in ninth place with 21 points, while the men are in seventh place with 33 points.

Track & Field Set To Compete At MIAC Indoor Championships This Weekend

The Gustavus track & field teams are set to compete at the MIAC Indoor Championships this weekend, hosted by Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. The men’s heptathlon and women’s pentathlon are Thursday and Friday, while the rest of the events are Friday and Saturday. Last season, the Gustie men took ninth place with 36 points, while the women also took ninth with 29.5 points.

Men’s And Women’s Track & Field Set To Compete At Macalester Kilt Classic Friday

The Gustavus men’s and women’s track & field teams have one final tune-up before next week’s MIAC Indoor Championships as they travel to St. Paul Friday to compete at Macalester’s Kilt Classic. Participating teams include Augsburg, Bethel, Gustavus, Hamline, Macalester and St. Catherine.

Women’s Track & Field Competes At CSB-SJU Invite

The Gustavus women’s track and field team competed at the CSB-SJU Invitational Saturday at the Donald McNeely Spectrum. A trio of first place finishes highlighted the day for the Gusties. Sarah Swanson (Sr., Fairbanks, Alaska) won the shot put with a toss of 43-6.5, Lydia Hayes (So., Decorah, Iowa) took the gold in the one-mile at 5:25.46, and the 4x200-meter relay team of Maddison Ackiss (Jr., Fairbanks, Alaska), Jalia Anderson (Fy., Plymouth, Minn.), Kaitlin Bembenek (Sr., Prior Lake, Minn.) and Ashley Elford (So., Red Wing, Minn.) crossed the line in 1:51.45.

Women’s Track & Field Takes Fourth At Carleton’s Meet Of The Hearts

The Gustavus women’s track and field team took fourth place out of eight teams at Carleton’s Meet of the Hearts on Saturday. “We looked good overall with a few first place finishes and we have a bit of depth in areas,” Head Coach Dale Bahr said. “This gives us an idea of where we are at against similar competition.”

Track & Field Teams To Compete At Ted Nelson Classic Saturday

The Gustavus track and field teams are set to participate in the Ted Nelson Classic, hosted by the Minnesota State University, Mankato, on Saturday at the Myers Fieldhouse. Participating teams include Augustana, Carleton, Concordia, Gustavus, Iowa Central, Mary, Minnesota State, Minot State, Sioux Falls, South Dakota State, Southwest State, St. Cloud State, St. Olaf and UW-La Crosse. Field events begin at 11 a.m. and track events begin at 11:30 a.m.

Gustavus thrower Sarah Swanson (Fairbanks, Alaska) won not once, but twice, with a pair of spectacular performances last weekend at the St. Olaf Invite. The Gustie senior finished first in both her events - the shot put and weight throw - with distances that rank among the top two in the MIAC this season. For her performance, the MIAC sports information directors honored Swanson Wednesday with the MIAC Women's Indoor Field Athlete-of-the-Week award.
