Sophie Leininger Honored With Second MIAC Elite 22 Award

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced Monday morning its Elite 22 Award winners and Gustavus Adolphus senior midfielder Sophie Leininger (Plymouth, Minn.) has been named the conference’s recipient of the honor for women’s soccer.

Becker, Mazzone Named MIAC Women’s Soccer All-Conference

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its Women’s Soccer Awards Thursday and two Gusties earned All-Conference accolades. Goalkeeper Ashley Becker (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) was named Defensive Player of the Year, while defender Josie Mazzone (Sr., Rapid City, S.D.) joins Becker on the All-MIAC Team. Midfielder Sophie Leininger (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) and defender Emily Odermatt (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn.) were named honorable mention.

Sophie Leininger Named CoSIDA Academic All-District

The 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Soccer Teams were released Thursday and Gustavus senior midfielder Sophie Leininger (Plymouth, Minn.) was named to the 11-member District 6 Team, which features student-athletes of institutions from Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.

Women’s Soccer Drops Double Overtime Heartbreaker In MIAC Championship Match

Despite a spectacular goalkeeping performance by Ashley Becker (Jr., Farmington, Minn.), the Gustavus women’s soccer team could not complete one final upset in its quest for the MIAC playoff championship as St. Catherine outlasted the Gusties 1-0 in double overtime. In an improbable conference title matchup between the No. 6 seed Gusties and No. 5 seed Wildcats, it was the home team that secured an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, as the Gusties finished their season 10-6-4 overall.

Women’s Soccer Seeks Second MIAC Playoff Title Saturday At St. Kate’s

The Gustavus women’s soccer team heads to St. Paul, Minn. Saturday afternoon for the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff championship against St. Catherine University beginning at 1 p.m. Both squads upset the entire playoff field as the No. 6 seed Gusties defeated No. 3 St. Olaf and No. 2 St. Thomas, while the No. 5 seed Wildcats beat No. 4 Saint Ben's and No. 1 Augsburg. 

Another Upset, Women’s Soccer Takes Down St. Thomas On Penalty Kicks

Double overtime wasn’t enough to decide a winner in Wednesday’s MIAC women’s soccer semifinal playoff match. Tied 1-1 after 110 minutes and forced to penalty kicks, Gustavus keeper Ashley Becker (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) came up big with two stops and the Gusties, seeded No. 6, made all four attempts to upset No. 2 seed St. Thomas and advance to the MIAC championship game for the second time in three seasons.

Women’s Soccer Upsets St. Olaf 2-0 To Advance In MIAC Playoffs

The final 35 seconds of the first half and the first 34 seconds of the second proved to be the most exciting moments in Tuesday’s MIAC women’s soccer quarterfinal match at No. 3 seed St. Olaf. Gustavus keeper Ashley Becker (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) made a diving penalty kick save at the end of the first half, while Chase Miller (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) worked around a number of defenders in the box and found the left side of the net for a goal to start the second, which proved to be the game-winner in a 2-0 victory for the No. 6 seed Gusties.

Women’s Soccer Looks For Repeat Performance At St. Olaf To Open MIAC Playoffs

The Gustavus women’s soccer team heads to Northfield, Minn. Tuesday afternoon for a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference quarterfinal playoff matchup against St. Olaf College beginning at 2 p.m. The Gusties are the No. 6 seed with a 9-5-3 overall record and finished with a 5-4-2 mark in the MIAC, while the No. 3 seed Oles are 9-7-2 overall and finished 6-3-2 in the league.

The Gustavus women’s soccer team dropped its regular season finale 1-0 to Macalester on Saturday at the Gustie Soccer Field. The Gusties end the regular season 9-5-3 overall and 5-4-2 in the MIAC, while the Scots end their season 7-6-4 overall and 4-4-3 in the league.

Women’s Soccer Hosts Macalester On Senior Day

The Gustavus women’s soccer team concludes the regular season Saturday at the Gustie Soccer Field, hosting Macalester at 3:30 p.m. for its Senior Day. The Gusties enter the match 9-4-3 overall and 5-3-2 in the MIAC, while the Scots are 6-6-4 overall and 3-4-3 in the league. Gustavus has secured a playoff berth and is jockeying for seeding.
