SAINT PETER, Minn. – Numerous Gustavus swim & dive student-athletes received awards from the MIAC on Thursday, while a select few earned invites to the NCAA Championships.
Jon Carlson and Erik Small (Sr., Hudson, Wis.) highlighted the MIAC awards as Carlson was named Men’s Coach of the Year and Small was selected Men’s Swimmer of the Year. Small placed first in all five of his events – 200 IM (1:51.39), 400 IM (4:00.27 B), 200 butterfly (1:52.75), and the 200 (1:21.57 B) and 400 (3:00.89 B) freestyle relays. Small is now the eighth Gustie since 2002 to be named MIAC Men’s Swimmer of the Year.
Carlson earns his sixth MIAC Men’s Coach of the Year honor and fourth consecutive. A total of 40 All-Conference awards were earned by the Gustie men, including 16 event champions out of a possible 20 events.
The Gustie women earned 23 All-Conference honors and five event championships.
2023 Women’s Conference Honors
Also, the NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Committee announced the swimming participants in the 2023 NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships on Thursday. The national meet will be held March 15-18 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.
The Gustie women’s 200 free relay team of Ellen Hofstede (Sr., Saint Paul), Marit Isaacson (So., Saint Paul), Lucy Peterson (Jr., Saint Paul), and Abby Yartz (Sr., Bemidji) qualified with a time of 1:33.83, which ranks 11th, while the lone men’s representative from the MIAC is Andrew Becker (Sr., Northfield) as an alternate in the 100 free with a time of 44.79.
