The Gustavus men’s hockey team played UW-Superior on Saturday night at Don Roberts Ice Rink in St. Peter, Minn. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Gusties 5-2 to improve to 1-0-1, while the Gusties fall to 0-2-0. There were 39 penalties called in Saturday’s game for a total of 72 minutes. UW-Superior was 3-12 on power plays and Gustavus was 0-16 on power plays.
The Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead 5:26 into the first period with a power play goal from Jay Dardis. Dale Lupul and Yann Poirier were awarded the assist on the goal. Gustavus repsonded with a short handed goal at 10:04 to tie the game at 1-1. Steve Dusich scored the goal for Gustavus and Adam Meyer recorded the assist.
UW-Superior scored three goals in the second period to extend its lead to three goals. Dale Lupul, Mike Wiggins and Kyle Nosen were the goalscorers for the Yellow Jackets. Rob Whidden added a power play goal at 8:59 in the final period to give the Yellow Jackets a 5-1 lead. Steven Jensen scored at 15:09 into the third period for the Gusties to make the final 5-2 in favor of the Yellow Jackets.
Yellow Jackets goaltender Mattieu Bohnelly faced 25 shots and made 23 saves to record his first win of the season. Gustavus goaltender Erik Kraska faced 28 shots and made 23 saves in his first match of the season.
Gustavus will host UW-Eau Claire on Friday, November 12 and UW-Stevens Point on Saturday, November 13.
