The Gustavus women’s hockey team opened its season with a 2-2 overtime tie with non-conference opponent the University of Wisconsin-Superior. The Gustavus goals were scored by Laura Stypulkowski and Abby Randall. Kara Meyer made 7 saves in the nets for the Gusties. Gustavus is now 0-0-1 on the season, while UW-Superior moves to 1-0-1 overall.

Gustavus opened the scoring when Laura Stypulkowski tallied a power-play goal at 8:06 of the first period. Andrea Peterson and Molly Doyle were credited with assists. It looked like the Gusties would enter the locker room with a 1-0 lead after the first period, however Amy Kachinske beat Gustavus goaltender Kara Meyer with :04 seconds on the clock to tie the game at 1-1. Vi Theofylatos picked up the assist. The Gusties outshot the Yellowjackets 15-2 in the first period.

UW-Superior took a 2-1 lead when Gina Baranzelli scored at 10:41 of the second period. Hally Sharrow was credited with the assist. The Yellowjackets took a 2-1 lead into the lockerroom.

Gustavus tied the game at 2-2 when Abby Randall scored a power-play goal at 9:40 of the third period. Andrea Peterson and Laura Stypulkowski were credited with assists. The Gusties controlled play in the third period outshooting the Yellowjackets 11-0, however they could not get the deciding goal sending the game into overtime.

Both teams picked up penalties in the overtime and both had power play opportunities, but neither team could score. Gustavus outshot UW-Superior 3-1.

Gustavus finished the game with a commanding 38-9 edge in shots on goal. Gustie goaltender Kara Meyer made seven saves while Yellowjacket netminder Kristy Faechner recorded 36 saves.

Gustavus entered the game ranked #6 in the USCHO.com Division III poll while the Yellowjackets were ranked #8.
