The Gustavus gymnastics team traveled to Lindenwood Sunday to compete in a quad meet and scored a season-high 184.800. The score is the sixth highest in Gustavus program history. Lindenwood won the meet with a 194.475.

“That’s the meet we’ve been working towards,” said Head Coach Aryn DeGrood. “It was such an improvement from Thursday. It was a team effort and the unity was incredible. We really challenged them and they responded beautifully.”

Gustavus started their day on beam with a school record mark of 47.225. Annie Corbett (Fy., Brookfield, Wis.) led the Gusties with a school record tying score of 9.750, a mark that had stood for 21 years. Leah Heilig (Sr., Forest Lake) and Emma [Esteb] (Fy., Woodbury) both also posted career highs with scores of 9.625 and 9.475, respectively.

“To break 47 on beam for the first time in program history is remarkable,” said DeGrood. “The energy but calm at the same time radiated on beam and it is what the coaches knew they were capable of. They worked together and made magic happen. ”

The Gusties were also strong on vault, scoring a 46.475, and all six competitors scoring above nine. Corbett led the way with a 9.575, while Heilig followed with a 9.325. The Black and Gold rounded out its scores with a 46.050 on the floor and 44.850 on bars. Corbett led the Gusties in both other events with a 9.525 on floor and a 9.600 on bars. Corbett’s all around score of 38.450 was fourth overall and is the second highest score in school history.

“Individually, Annie [Corbett] had an outstanding performance,” DeGrood said. “Her all-around is now second all time and she tied the beam record. Emma [Esteb] was solid on her three events again. Annie [Gladitsch] (So., North Branch) had a career high on beam and is really coming in to her own. Sophie [Redding] (So., St. Paul) finally nailed that bar routine and we know it’s the catalyst she needed.”

“The best part about the entire day is that there are still improvements to be made and this is just the tip of the iceberg of what we are capable of.”
