MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – After the first day of the MIAC Swim & Dive Championships, the Gustavus men lead the field with 118 points and the women are tied for second with 64 points.
The men’s 800 free relay team of Erik Small (Fy., Hudson, Wis.), Matt Allison (Jr., Grand Rapids), Josh Muntifering (Jr., Buffalo), and Nolan Larson (Jr., West Des Moines, Iowa) highlighted the night with a new meet and MIAC record time of 6:40.27, which would have placed eighth at the NCAA Championships last year.
“Obviously pumped about the MIAC record and overall I thought it was a great start to the meet,” Head Coach Jon Carlson said. “I also felt the divers put us in good position for tomorrow.”
Dane Hudson (Fy., Eden Prairie), Taylor Vander Jeugdt (Fy., Jurnee, Ill.), Ryan Sklar (Sr., Portland, Ore.), and Andrew Becker (Fy., Northfield) placed second in the 200 medley relay in 1:32.69, and Logan Bican (Sr., Monticello) took second in the 3-meter dive with a NCAA A qualifying score of 451.70.
On the women’s side, Abby Yartz (Fy., Bemidji), Maddie Westendorp (Sr., St. Michael), Ellen Hofstede (Fy., Hopkins), and Alyssa Lokensgard (Sr., Saint Peter) took third in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.83. Annika Johns (Fy., Stillwater), Lokensgard, Amelia Bjorklund (Jr., Bloomington), and Hofstede also took third in the 800 free relay in 7:44.81.
The MIAC Championships continue with prelims at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
