Women’s Hockey Opens MIAC Play this Weekend Against St. Kate’s

The Gustavus women’s hockey team enters its conference season tonight with the start of a home-home series against St. Catherine. Tonight’s game in Saint Paul starts and 7 p.m. and tomorrow’s game at Don Roberts Ice Rink begins at 2 p.m.

The Series: Tonight’s game marks the 47th meeting between Gustavus and St. Catherine with the Gusties leading the all-time series 38-4-4. Last season the Gusties won the first game of the series 2-0 and then tied 2-2 on Saturday.

Scouting the Gusties: Gustavus, ranked No. 9 in the latest USCHO.com poll, has started the season 3-0, most recently defeating UW-Eau Claire 1-0 last Saturday. The Gusties have scored eight goals from seven different players, led by Jordyn Peterson’s two scores. Stephanie Anderson, Molly McHugh, and Lilia Scheid each have two points as well. All three Gustie goalies have played a game each. Katie McCoy started against Eau Claire and shut out the No. 7-ranked Blugolds with 19 saves in her first collegiate start, earning MIAC Athlete of the Week. The goalies have combined for a 0.33 goals against average and .976 save percentage, allowing just one goal and stopping 40 shots. As a team, the Gusties average 33.0 shots per game and are 2-13 on the power play. They have not allowed a goal in five penalty kills.

Scouting the Wildcats: St Kate’s has also started its season 3-0, most recently defeating Marian University 6-1 last Saturday. Nicole Maddox and Emilee Anderson lead the offense with six points apiece. Maddox has four goals and two assists, while Anderson has three goals and three assists. Lindsey Hays leads the team with five assists. Bryce Boreen has spent the most time in goal with a 0.66 goals against average and a .974 save percentage. As a team, the Wildcats take 35.7 shots per game and have scored 19 goals in three games. They are 3-15 on the power play have have killed off all 11 opponent’s skater advantages.
