Men’s Hockey Set for Weekend Slate in Wisconsin

The Gustavus men’s hockey team will hit the road this weekend as they head to Wisconsin for a pair of contests. The 2-0 Gusties will travel to No. 1 UW-Stevens Point Friday night for a 7 p.m. contest before they head to Menomonie, Wis. Saturday for a 7 p.m. game with UW-Stout.

The Series: Friday night’s game marks the 15th all-time matchup between the two teams with UW-Stevens Point currently leading the series 7-5-2. The Gusties and Pointers last met on Nov. 4, 2016 with the two teams skating to a 3-3 OT tie.

Saturday night’s contest is the 28th all-time meeting between the Gusties and Blue Devils with Gustavus holding a 13-11-3 edge. The two teams matched up last year on Nov. 10 with UW-Stout taking a 4-1 win.

Scouting the Pointers: Stevens Point comes into the contest ranked No. 1 in the nation and comes off a series split with No. 4 St. Norbert this past weekend. In their two games, the Pointers outshot the Green Knights 54-42 and scored five goals, while allowing four. Luke McElhenie scored a goal in both contests as well as adding an assist in the second game, while Ryan Mackellar posted an assist in their first game and a goal in game two. Eli Billing started both games in net, making 38 saves and allowing four goals for a save percentage of .905.

Scouting the Blue Devils: UW-Stout comes into weekend following a pair of losses to Bethel and Marian last weekend, losing to the Royals 3-2 Friday before falling to the Knights 5-4 Saturday. Vladislav Sorokin has been the team’s leader after a weekend where tallied  three goals, while Raphael Gosselin added three assists. The Blue Devils have seen three different goalies in net, with Evan Bisek posting the best numbers, making 24 saves while allowing one goal for a save percentage of .960 when he came on in relief in the team’s first contest.

Scouting the Gusties: Gustavus is coming off a pair of wins last weekend of Lawrence University. The Gusties won 5-2 Friday before winning a 4-3 OT decision on Saturday. The Gusties have seen 15 different players tally a point through two contests with Tyler Ebner (So., La Crosse, Wis.) and Nick Klishko (Jr., San Diego, Calif) having three each thanks to a goal and two assists. Logan Norman (Jr., Luverne) is the only Gustie with multiple goals as he had two in the season opener. Robbie Goor (Jr., Anoka) and Filip Grancarov (Fy., Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic) each got a win in net, with save percentages of .929 and .885, respectively.
