Falcons Use Strong First Period to Best Women’s Hockey 4-0

The No. 5 UW-River Falls Falcons scored three goals in the first 11:26 of the contest to help propel them to a 4-0 victory over the Gustavus women’s hockey team on Saturday.

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The No. 5 UW-River Falls Falcons scored three goals in the first 11:26 of the contest to help propel them to a 4-0 victory over the Gustavus women’s hockey team on Saturday. With the loss the Gusties fall to 7-3-1 overall while the Falcons move to 9-1-0.

The Falcons scored an even strength goal just 47 seconds into the contest and from there on out they used strong special teams play to defeat the Gusties. At the 4:36 mark they scored a power play goal, then less than 7 minutes later they found the back of the net with a short handed goal to take the 3-0 lead.

The game went scoreless for nearly 20 minutes before the Falcons struck again 11 minutes into the second period on another power play goal to gain a 4-0 edge that would hold out for the victory.

The Falcons outshot the Gusties in the contest by a margin of 20-12.

Amanda DiNella (Sr., Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.) suffered the loss in the contest making 11 saves while allowing four goals. Paige Press (Sr., Cottage Grove, Minn.) played the final period and allowed no goals while making five saves.

The Gusties will now have nearly a month off before they host UW-Eau Claire on January 5th for a 2 p.m. contest at Don Roberts Ice Rink.
