TOWSON, Md. – The Gustavus gymnastics team competed at Towson University along with Southern Connecticut State Sunday afternoon, turning in a season-high total of 184.925 for third place, the fourth highest team score in program history.

Gustavus compiled season-best scores in each event except bars, scoring a school record 47.425 on vault, 44.625 on bars, 45.400 on beam, and 47.475 on floor.

“It’s be such a fun, and busy, trip for us,” said Head Coach Aryn DeGrood. “We were able to cap it off with a season-high score which was a huge accomplishment. But we certainly have lots of room for improvement.”

Amanda Malo (Jr., Grenwood, Minn.) led the team on the vault with a career-high 9.550, followed by career-highs from Veronica Vasina (Jr., Arvada, Colo.) at 9.525, Leah Heilig (So., Forest Lake, Minn.) at 9.475, Alyssa Teper (Fy., Medina, Ohio) at 9.400, and Kate Schneider (Sr., Albany, Minn.) at 9.325.

“I wasn’t sure how the team was going to respond today after all the sightseeing we’ve been doing on this trip. We also hadn’t been in the gym since Thursday and typically we practice the days leading up to a meet. And after bars, I was still fairly nervous about that decision. Bars was uncharacteristically rough. The middle of the lineup all had major mistakes. But the team did exactly what we needed and turned in the best beam performance of the year. And it continued from there into floor and vault. I was very proud of the fight and determination in them today on those last three events,” said DeGrood.

Malo also paced the Gusties on the floor exercise with a career-best score of 9.650, while picking up a career-best score on bars at 9.500, helping lead to her career-high all-around score of 37.950.

Torrie Aycock (Jr., Buffalo, Minn.) also finished with a career-high score of 9.625 on floor, with Heilig not far behind at 9.600.

Katy Trunk (Jr., North Branch, Minn.) led Gustavus on the beam with a career-best score of 9.450.

“Individually, we had so many personal bests. It was really really fun to see their hard work rewarded and see so many personal records set. Now we look towards a whirl wind last two weeks of the regular season. But most importantly, we look towards senior night when we get to honor those wonderful women,” DeGrood concluded.

Next up, Gustavus hosts Winona State University at 6 p.m. next Friday at Sponberg Gymnastics Studio. Next Sunday the Gusties travel to St. Paul, Minn. for another dual meet at Hamline Universtiy.
