ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team prepares for a series against the No. 14-ranked Augsburg University this weekend. The Gusties (7-7-3, 6-2 MIAC) hosts the Auggies (12-5, 6-2 MIAC) on Friday prior to heading to Minneapolis, Minn. Saturday evening.

Last Time Out

The Gusties split a series with the University of St. Thomas last weekend, earning a 5-2 win on Friday in Mendota Heights, Minn., the first Gustavus win over the Tommies since 2015. St. Thomas salvaged a series split with a 4-1 win at Don Roberts Ice Rink on Saturday.

Series Snapshot

Friday’s game will mark the 129th all-time meeting between the Gustavus and Augsburg men’s ice hockey programs, with the Gusties holding an 73-49-6 advantage in the series. The two teams are 5-5 in the previous 10 meetings, with Augsburg riding a three-game winning streak. 

In the 2017-18 season opener at the MIAC showcase in Blaine, Minn., the Auggies downed Gustavus with a 3-2 overtime victory. The Gusties saw their 2-1 lead crumble as Augsburg scored early in the third period and with seconds remaining in the overtime period.

Scouting Augsburg

The No. 14-ranked Auggies are the top-scoring team in the MIAC and rank within the top-20 in the nation, averaging 3.7 goals per game. The Auggies, on a four-game winning streak, swept Hamline University Jan. 5-6 prior to defeating No. 3 Wisconsin-Stevens Point 2-1 and UW-Stout 6-2 last weekend.

Senior captain Nate Flynn leads Augsburg with 20 points, tied for the lead in the MIAC with 12 goals. In addition, Chandler Madry is tied for the lead in the conference with 14 assists. Junior goaltender Nick Schmit has started in all but one game this season and has registered a 2.19 goals against average and a .920 save percentage.

Goaltending Consistency

The netminding duo of Chris Amsden (Jr., St. Peter, Minn.) and Robbie Goor (Fy., Anoka, Minn.) have continued to be a steady presence, each sharing time in goal. Goor ranks second in the MIAC with a 1.96 goals against average and fifth with a .921 save percentage. Amsden ranks fourth with a .922 save percentage and sixth with a 2.27 goals against average.

Gustavus Notables

  • First-year forward Caleb Anderson (Fy., Sioux Falls, S.D.) leads the MIAC in freshman scoring and is tied for the team-lead with 12 points (4g-8a).
    • Anderson is tied for the lead in Division III with two shorthanded goals. The Gusties scored one shorthanded goal all of last season.
    • Anderson is tied for the lead in the conference with two game-winning goals and ranks within the top-five with six power play points (1g-5a).
  • Evan Erickson (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) leads the Gusties with five goals (T-10th/MIAC).
  • The Gusties’ top line of Anderson, Erickson, and Colin Hernon (Sr., Bloomington, Minn.) accounted for half of the team’s scoring in the St. Thomas series, each recording three points through two games.
  • After two consecutive series sweeps over Hamline and Bethel, the Gusties surpassed their win total from the 2016-17 season.
  • 17 different Gusties have found their way into the goal-scoring column through 17 games this season.
