WAVERYLY, Iowa – The Gustavus women’s basketball team got back to its winning ways Saturday afternoon, defeating Wisconsin-Superior 67-46 in the consolation game of the Wartburg Holiday Tournament. The victory marks the 100th in Head Coach Laurie Kelly’s sixth season at Gustavus as the Gusties improve to 9-2 overall. Kelly becomes the second fastest Gustavus head coach to collect 100 wins, reaching the mark after 144 games. Mickey Haller (2000-12) reached 100 wins after 142 games.

After trailing 4-2 to start the game, Gustavus scored 12 unanswered points and never looked back. The Gusties led 36-21 at halftime after shooting 46.4 percent from the floor and limiting the Yellowjackets to 33.3 percent shooting. UW-Superior got within nine points of the lead early in the second half, but that would be the closest it would get as Gustavus cruised to the 21-point decision.

Mikayla Miller (Sr., Goodhue, Minn.) led the victors with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor, including a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. Miller’s 20 points in the win puts her at 1,480 for her career, surpassing Bri Monahan (2003-07) for second place on Gustavus’s all-time career scoring list. Miller is now 300 points shy of becoming the program’s sole record holder, currently held by Jess Vadnais (1,779, 2004-08). The senior guard was also named to the All-Tournament Team. Kendall Thompson (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) also reached double figures with 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting.

As a team, the Gusties shot 43.4 percent in the game and were 15-of-17 from the charity stripe. They also registered 15 steals and forced 25 turnovers. UW-Superior won the battle of the boards 34-27, but shot just 36.4 percent from the field.

Gustavus returns to conference play at 7 p.m. Wednesday, traveling to Carleton.
