Men’s Hockey Returns To Action With Bethel Series, Hosts Teddy Bear Toss Friday

The Gustavus men’s hockey team is set to return to action, coming off Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action, taking on Bethel University. The Gusties (4-3-1, 3-1 MIAC) host the Royals (1-10, 1-4 MIAC) during the second annual Teddy Bear Toss benefit on Friday prior to Bethel hosting on Saturday.

Teddy Bear Toss

Gustavus Adolphus College’s student fan organization, The Hill Crew, is holding its second annual Teddy Bear Toss benefit on Friday. Attendees who bring a new teddy bear or stuffed animal will receive free admission to the game, which will benefit Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare and Goodwill. After the Gusties score their first goal, fans will throw their teddy bears and stuffed animals onto the ice, where they will be collected and donated to the two Mankato organizations. Series Snapshot

Friday’s game marks the 86th all-time meeting between Gustavus and Bethel, with the Gusties holding a 59-25-1 advantage in the series. In the last 10 contests between the two teams, Gustavus holds a 7-3 advantage. Last season, the Black and Gold earned its first conference sweep since the 2013-14 season with 6-2 and 3-0 victories over the Royals.

Last Time Out

The Gusties earned their second sweep in the last three seasons with 5-2 and 4-1 victories over Hamline University two weekends ago, Nov. 17-18. Friday’s win was headline by five unanswered goals after a two-goal deficit early in the first period. On Saturday, the Black and Gold jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first two periods prior to Hamline negating the shutout opportunity with an extra attacker goal with under a minute remaining.

  • First-year forward Caleb Anderson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) leads the team in scoring with eight points off three goals and five assists and leads the conference in freshman scoring.
  • Anderson is tied for the lead in Division III with two shorthanded goals. The Gusties scored one shorthanded goal all of last season.
  • In four games played, first-year goaltender Robbie Goor (Anoka, Minn.) has allowed four goals and ranks atop of the MIAC with a 1.30 goals against average and second with a .941 save percentage.
  • 16 different Gusties have found their way into the goal-scoring column through the first eight games this season.
  • Although Gustavus has struggled to stay out of the penalty box with 14.8 penalty minutes per game (2nd/MIAC), they have been successful on the penalty kill, killing off 36 of 42 chances for a 85.7 percentage (2nd/MIAC).
