Men’s Hockey Hosts UW-Superior and UW-Stout During Parents Weekend

The Gustavus men’s hockey team is set for two non-conference games this weekend, hosting Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents Wisconsin and Wisconsin-Stout during parents weekend. The Gusties (1-2-1, 1-1 MIAC) host the Yellowjackets (0-3, 0-0 WIAC) on Friday and the Blue Devils (1-2-1, 0-2 WIAC) on Saturday.

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team is set for two non-conference games this weekend, hosting Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents Wisconsin and Wisconsin-Stout during parents weekend. The Gusties (1-2-1, 1-1 MIAC) host the Yellowjackets (0-3, 0-0 WIAC) on Friday and the Blue Devils (1-2-1, 0-2 WIAC) on Saturday.

Last time out

The Gusties opened their 2017-18 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference slate last weekend, splitting a series with St. Olaf College. On Friday in Northfield, Minn., Gustavus claimed its first win of the season with a 3-1 victory. Colton Schmidt (So., Eden Prarie, Minn.) got the Gusties on the board in the first period, while Logan Haskins (Fy., Rochester, Minn.) and Dominic Picciano (Fy., Minnetonka, Minn.) followed with their first collegiate goals. Chris Amsden (Jr., St. Peter, Minn.) made 21 saves in goal to record the win. In the home opener on Saturday, special teams woes downed the Gusties in a 6-2 loss versus the Oles. St. Olaf went 4-for-7 on the man advantage, scoring three times in the second period and twice in the third to secure the win. Tyler Rock (Fy., Savage, Minn.) and Tim Donohue (Jr., Bloomington, Minn.) tallied goals for Gustavus.

First-years featured

The Gustavus freshman class continued to make a difference during the conference-opening weekend, highlighted by three career-first goals from Haskins, Picciano, and T. Rock. The Gustie newcomers have accounted for nearly half of the team’s scoring numbers, while each has appeared in at least one game. Haskins and Caleb Anderson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) are tied for the team scoring lead with two points each.

The series

Friday’s game marks the 16th all-time meeting between Gustavus and UW-Superior, with the Yellowjackets holding an 11-3-1 advantage in the series. UW-Superior is on a three-game winning streak against the Gusties, including a 5-3 victory over Gustavus last season in Superior, Wis.

Saturday’s game marks the 25th all-time meeting between Gustavus and UW-Stout, with the Gusties holding a 13-9-3 advantage in the series. The two teams met twice last season, with the Blue Devils winning 2-1 in Menomonie, Wis. prior to a 3-3 draw in St. Peter.
