GREENWOOD, Ind. – The 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Baseball Teams were released Thursday and Gustavus senior Josh Chatfield (Apple Valley, Minn.) was named to the 11-member District 6 Team, which features student-athletes from Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Chatfield makes his second appearance on the Academic All-District Team after receiving the honor last season.
Chatfield boasts a 3.86 GPA in public accounting and has started in all but one game this season. The Eastview product leads Gustavus regular starters with a .356 batting average (10th/MIAC), including 47 hits (6th/MIAC), 33 runs (4th/MIAC), 10 doubles, two home runs, and 31 RBI (5th/MIAC). Chatfield has a slugging percentage of .477 and an on-base percentage of .393. He also leads the team with 15 multiple hit games, including one game with four hits, and had a hitting streak of seven games. In the outfield, Chatfield has recorded 73 putouts and has committed just one error after starting 33 games in right.
In the history of Gustavus baseball, which spans over a century, Chatfield’s career numbers rank among the program’s top players in numerous statistical categories. He ranks sixth in RBI (89), seventh in doubles (34), eighth in at-bats (475), eighth in hits (165), 13th in batting average (.347), and 14th in games played (137).
Chatfield has been a key member of a Gustie team attempting to bring the program back to prominence in the MIAC. After splitting with Augsburg in the final road series yesterday, the Gusties are above. 500 at 20-16 and are 8-10 in the MIAC. The 20 wins match last season’s victory total with two games to play, while the team has reached 20 wins for the 12th time in program history.
This year’s CoSIDA Academic All-District 6 Team includes five other members of MIAC institutions – Lars Anderson of Bethel, Brennan Swan of Saint John’s, Nick McMullen of Macalester, Ben Buerkle of Saint Mary’s, and Jack Duffy of Augsburg.
First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot, where first-, second-, and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
