MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team Saturday dropped the series finale 3-2 in overtime against Concordia. This loss moves the Gusties to 2-13-4 overall and 1-8-1 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Cobbers improve to 11-7-1 overall and 5-4-1 in the league.
Gustavus struck first in the opening frame as Jared Docken (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) scored his first goal of the season at the 15:25 mark, assisted by Colton Schmidt (Fy., Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Tim Donohue (Jr., Bloomington, Minn.). The Cobbers answered two minutes later on a power play and then took a 2-1 lead 30 seconds after their first goal to carry to 2-1 advantage into the first intermission.
After a scoreless second period that saw just 10 shots combined, the Gusties netted the equalizer 2:16 into the third on Ross Kovacs’ (Sr., Dickinson, N.D.) first score of the season, assisted by Reid Brown (Fy., Superior, Colo.). Gustavus continued to put on the pressure and outshot the Cobbers 9-6 in the final 20 minutes, but after 60 minutes the score remained 2-2 to force the overtime. With 1:02 remaining in the extra frame, the Cobbers were able to score the sudden death goal and earn the series sweep.
Chris Amsden (So., St. Peter, Minn.) suffered the loss in net after recording 22 saves. The Gusties outshot the Cobbers for the second straight day, 32-25. The visitors were also scoreless on the power play in three opportunities.
Gustavus next has an away-home series against Saint Mary’s next Friday and Saturday.
