Setting the scene: The Gustavus Adolphus College women’s basketball team continues Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon, traveling to Winona, Minn. to take on Saint Mary’s Universtity. The Gusties enter with a 8-0 overall record while the Cardinals are 6-2 on the season. Gustvaus most recently earned its eighth win of the season Wednesday evening, defeating the St. Olaf College by a score of 79-61 to remain undefeated. Mikayla Miller led the Gusties with 25 points and became the 11th all-time women’s basketball player to reach the 1,000-point mark in her career.

The series: Saturday’s contest marks the 76th all-time meeting between Gustavus and Saint Mary’s with the Gusties holding a 51-24 record over the Cardinals. Last season, Gustavus lost twice against Saint Mary’s, last losing in in the MIAC Playoff Semifinals in Winona.

Scouting the Cardinals: Saint Mary’s has begun the 2016-17 with a 6-2 record. The Cardinals most recently fell by a score of 69-56 against Bethel University on Wednesday. Saint Mary’s averages 63.6 points per game and is led by sophomore forward Brandi Blattner, who is averaging 15.1 points per game and ranks second in the MIAC with an average of 9.4 rebounds per game.

Gustavus notables:

– The Gusties’ 8-0 start marks the best start of the season since the 2002-03 Gustavus squad began the season with a 13-0 record before suffering its first loss.

– The Black and Gold have outscored opponents by double figures in all eight wins this season. – Gustavus ranks first in the MIAC in points per game (78.3), team field goal percentage (47.8), assists per game (19.1), and steals per game (15.1).

– In Wednesday’s win over St. Olaf, Mikayla Miller (Jr., Goodhue, Minn.) scored 25 points to eclipse 1,000 points for her career. She becomes the 11th all-time Gustavus women’s basketball player to reach the 1,000-point mark.

– Mikayla Miller leads the Gusties, averaging 18.3 points per game – which ranks tied for first in the MIAC.

Miranda Rice (Jr., Forest Lake, Minn.) ranks among the top-five scorers in the MIAC, averaging 16.5 points per game. Her 63.5 field goal percentage is second in the MIAC. Hannah Howard (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) ranks right behind Rice, shooting 63 percent from the field.

Taylor Anderson (So., Rogers, Minn.) is 9-18 from three-point range this season, shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc to rank tied for second best in the MIAC.
