ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s swimming and diving squad tallied 1,321 total team points to earn a first place finish of six teams at the 2016 Grace Goblirsch Invitational Saturday at Vic Gustafson Pool.
In 18 total events, the Gustie men owned eight first place finishes.
Matt Allison (Fy., Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Tanner Sonnek (So., North Mankato, Minn.) each earned two individual top finishes to lead the way for the Black and Gold.
Allison earned the top crown in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle races. Finishing ahead of 21 competitors, Allison raced to a time of 21.95 in the 50-yard and a time of 49.56 in the 100-yard, outlasting 33 competitors.
Sonnek raced to first place finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke and the 500-yard freestyle. Sonnek raced ahead of 14 participants for a top finish time of 2:10.75 in the breaststroke, followed by a 5:01.56 top time in the freestyle.
The Gusties also owned two top finishes in diving. In three-meter diving, Carson Scholberg (So., Apple Valley, Minn.) notched 187.9 points to earn the top crown. Another first place finish came from Logan Bican (Fy., Monticello, Minn.) in one-meter diving, totaling 211.3 points.
Additionally, Gustavus was strong in relay races as they earned another two top crowns. The 200-yard medley relay squad of Allison, Sonnek, Ryan Sklar (Fy., Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Adam Peters (Sr., Montevideo, Minn.) finished first of 13 teams with a time of 1:39.53.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Allison, Adam Peters, Will Clark (Fy., Northfield, Minn.) and Seth Berry (Jr., Bloomington, Minn.) also earned the top finish, racing to a 1:27.92 mark.
The Gusties return to action Dec. 2-3 as they travel to Minneapolis, Minn. to compete in the Jean Freeman Invitational.
