Alhouni Heads To ITA Oracle Cup

Mohanad Alhouni (Jr., Tripoli, Libya) will represent the Gustavus men’s tennis team at the 2016 ITA Oracle Cup, held at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Club in Surprise, Arizona October 13-16.

ST. PETER, Minn. – Mohanad Alhouni (Jr., Tripoli, Libya) will represent the Gustavus men’s tennis team at the 2016 ITA Oracle Cup, held at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Club in Surprise, Arizona October 13-16.

As the ITA Midwest Regional singles champion, Alhouni advances to the ITA Oracle Cup/National Small College Championships. The National Small College Championships are comprised of the eight regional champions (and/or at-large selections) from NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA, and junior/community colleges. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete at one of the 84 ITA Regional Championships held across the country.

The ITA Midwest Regional Tournament wrapped up October 3 with an All-Gustie singles final at Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter, Minn. Alhouni prevailed by scores of 6-2, 6-2 past Patrick Whaling (So., Manikob Sabot, Va.). Alhouni and Whaling were also doubles teammates throughout the tournament and made it all the way to the semifinals.

Alhouni will take part in the Division III Singles Draws, and comes in as the No. 3 seed of eight competitors. Kai Yuen Leung of Skidmore College received the No. 1 seed and David Liu of The University of Chicago is the No. 2 seed.

In the first round Alhouni faces Nikolai Parodi of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Thursday at 10:30 a.m. (PST). The second round gets underway at 8:30 a.m. Friday, followed by the finals at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
