ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s soccer team fell by a score of 1-0 at the University of St. Thomas Saturday afternoon. With the loss the Gusties move to 1-2-0 in MIAC play and 4-2-2 overall, while St. Thomas remains undefeated with an overall record of 6-0-1.

Tough defense by the Gusties allowed for a scoreless first half, despite being outshot 8-1 by St. Thomas. In the second half, the Tommies scored what proved to be the game-winner at the 52 minute mark. Brie Bourdage scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Hailey Zweber.

“We certainly played hard today,” said Head Coach Laura Burnett-Kurie. “At times we moved the ball better than we have all season and we put together a strong 90 minutes. The first 45 minutes might have been the best we’ve had all year.”

St. Thomas held the advantage in shots taken during the game 15-3, and 6-0 shots on target. The Tommies also led in corner kicks with eight to the Gusties’ four.

Ashley Becker (So., Farmington, Minn.) made five saves in goal and suffered her second loss of the season. St. Thomas keeper Tarynn Theilig recorded her sixth win and fifth shutout of the season.

“We can walk away from this game with some confidence and we are looking forward to our next game,” Burnett-Kurie commented.
