HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – The Gustavus men’s golf team wrapped up the NCAA Division III Fall Preview on Tuesday at the Mission Inn Resort with a third round score of 300 for a total of 910 (+46), taking 13th place out of 18 of the top teams in the country. The Gusties carded a 304 in the first round and a 306 in the second. Huntingdon College won the event with a 868, Wittenberg University took second at 889, and Guilford College placed third at 895.
“Today we played better shooting a score of 300, but it could’ve been better and it would’ve been a good day to move up on people,” Assistant Coach Randy Stuckey said. “With the strong competitive field we need to be on our game for three solid rounds. This is something that we can do and we’re continuing to try to accomplish. Once again Chris Captain played fabulous placing fifth medalist. His surgical thinking and exceptional round at the golf course is fun to watch.”
Chris Captain (Jr., Rochester, Minn.) shot an even par in the third round for a total of 217 (+1), taking fifth place out of 92 golfers. Captain posted three birdies and as many bogies in the final round. Max Savini (So., Ramsey, Minn.) tied for 27th with a score of 76-75-75-226. Alec Aunan (Jr., Rock Island, Ill.) moved up 12 spots to finish tied for 65th with a score of 76-84-74-234. Ben Hauge (Fy., Ramsey, Minn.) tied for 76th with a 77-81-79-237, while Alex Koopmeiners (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn.) rounded out the Gustie scoring with a consistent 80-80-79-239, taking 83rd place.
Will Thrash of Huntingdon College won the NCAA Preview, carding a four-under par 67-75-70-212.
Gustavus next hosts the Twin Cities Classic Friday through Monday at the Le Sueur Country Club in Le Sueur, Minn.
“Looking forward to another competitive weekend at our own tournament then preparing for a conference championship,” Stuckey said.
