DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Gustavus volleyball team defeated Wartburg College and Loras College Saturday at the Loras College Invitational. The Gusties finished with a 3-1 record during the tournament and move to 7-2 overall.
Gustavus vs. Wartburg – 25-27, 20-25, 25-20, 25-21, 15-10
After falling in close battles the first two sets, the Gusties gained momentum and stole the final three to take the win.
Hanna Albers (So., St. Louis, Mo.) kept the momentum rolling from yesterday as she stayed hot and led the Gusties on the attack with a career-best 21 kills and on defense with 21 digs, which ties her career-best from yesterday. Nora Holtan (So., Rochester, Minn.) helped guide the Black and Gold with 49 assists.
Gustavus vs. Loras – 25-14, 25-21, 25-20
Game two was all Gusties as they took down Loras College in three sets. A 6-0 run early in the first set helped the Gusites catapult to a big 25-14 win to set the tone for the match. Albers led the Gusties on the attack once again with 11 kills.
For their performances, Albers and Holtan were selected to the Loras College Invitational All-Tournament Team.
“Another very competitive weekend for our team,” said Head Coach Rachelle Sherden. “Our defense played strong and our serve was tough. The offense was dynamic and are outsides did a good job controlling the ball. With each new challenge we are learning more about how we most effectively play together and also about the things we need to continue to work on.”
Gustavus returns to action next weekend as they head to the UW-Eau Claire Tournament on Saturday.
