LE SUEUR, Minn. – After entering the day five strokes back of first round leader University of St. Thomas, the Gustavus Adolphus College men’s golf team clawed its way to the top of the leaderboard to earn the Bobby Krig Invitational championship on Monday at the Le Sueur Country Club. The Gusties scored a 285 in round two and a 287 in round three for a three-round total of 873, six strokes ahead of second place Bethel University.
“This was a huge win for the guys in a great field,” said Coach Scott Moe. “Over three rounds, everybody played a big part in the win. I could not be more happy for our team and how hard they have worked in the offseason and this spring. It was great to see individuals finish in the top-10 as well. We’ll enjoy this and then look forward to getting prepared for a big tournament this coming weekend at Saint John’s”.
After a slow first round on Sunday, Max Savini lit a fire under himself in the meet’s second round, scoring a 68, tying the tournament’s low score. The first-year then put up a 71 in the third and final round giving him a total of 215, good for a tie for third place individually and just three strokes behind meet champion Davis Tollette.
Chris Captain and Alec Aunan also earned top-10 finishes, as each tied for seventh place with scores of 218. Captain earned scores of 71 and 75, while Aunan took home scores of 72 and 68. The Gusties were the only team with three players inside the top-7.
Rounding out the Gustie top-5 were Andrew Krasaway and Andrew Brandt. Krasaway tied for 21st with a total of 227, scoring a 76 in each Monday round, while Brandt tied for 24th with 228 total, notching a 74 and 73.
The Black and Gold had a second squad competing in the tournament as well, which was led by Alex Koopmeiners. Koopmeiners tied for 17th place with a total of 225 and scored a 75 and 76 on Monday.
Gustavus is back in action this Saturday when it heads to St. Cloud, Minn. to compete in the Saint John’s Invitational.
