COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s and women’s track and field teams each competed in the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University Outdoor Invitational on Sunday at the Saint John’s University Track and Field Complex. The Gustie women tallied 13 top-5 finishes at the meet, while the men were close behind with 11 top-5 finishers of their own.
The Gustie men were led by Thomas Knobbe (Jr., Decorah, Iowa) and Ed ReMine (Jr., Mantorville, Minn.), while the women were led by Marit Sonnesyn (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.), Mata Agre (Sr., Corcoran, Minn.), and Sarah Swanson (Sr., Fairbanks, Alaska). Knobbe took first place in the 5,000 meter run by crossing the finish line in 15:08.05, ReMine was the 400 meter hurdle champion in 57.45, Sonnesyn earned gold by running the 5,000 meter run in 18:27.34, Agre took first in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a 11:54.33, and Swanson was the shot put champion with a throw of 12.80 meters.
On the men’s side, following Knobbe and Ed ReMine, the Gustie runners featured Carston Dammann (Jr., Lake City, Minn.) who took second place in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a 10:04.74 and Sam ReMine (Jr., Mantorville, Minn.) who took third in the 400 meter dash with a 51.43. Ed ReMine also took fifth in the 110 meter hurdles with a 17.00. The Gustie 4×400 and 4×100 meter relay teams also earned top-5 finishes, coming in third and fourth, respectively.
In the field, Josh Curtis (Fy., Houston, Texas), Michael Hensch (Fy., North Branch, Minn.), and Sam Fischer (Sr., Sauk Centre, Minn.) each earned runner-up finishes. Curtis leaped 6.47 meters in the long jump, Hensch threw a 54.88 in the javelin, and Fischer threw 52.54 meters in the hammer throw. Hensch also took fifth in the shot put with a throw of 14.35.
On the women’s side, Kaitlin Bembenek (Sr., Prior Lake, Minn.) took second in the 200 meter dash with a 26.74, Lydia Hayes (So., Decorah, Iowa) was runner-up in the 800 meter dash with a 2:25.04, while Mikaela Algren (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn.) was fourth with a 2:28.05. Along with Agre, the Gusties also featured three other individuals in the top-5 of the 3,000 meter steeplechase, including Emily Sands (Jr., Rochester, Minn.), Olivia Rosenow (So., Maple Grove, Minn.), and Rachel Mohr (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) who took second, third, and fifth, respectively. The Gustie 4×100 meter relay team rounded out the top-5 running finishers by taking third place.
In the field, Kara Helgeson (Sr., Ortonville, Minn.) followed Swanson in the shot put with a fourth place finish after throwing 11.77 meters and Shelbie Walsh (Sr., Litchfield, Minn.) was second in the pole vault with a leap of 3.05 meters.
Both teams return to competition this coming weekend, as they host the Lee Krough Invite at the Gustavus Track and Field Complex beginning at 10 a.m.
