The men’s tennis team saw their hopes of a national title go up in smoke with a disappointing 4-1 loss to Williams in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships being held in Lewiston, Maine. This is the second consecutive year that the Gusties have been knocked out of the national tournament by Williams.
Gustavus started the match out on a good note by winning the doubles point. The #1 doubles team of Adam Morgan and Brett Morse-Karzen defeated Andrew Murray and Daniel Murray, 8-5. The #3 doubles team of Kyle Anderson and Jesse Brauer claimed the decisive second win by defeating Jeff Kivitz and Scott MacKenzie, 8-6.
The Gusties stumbled in singles play however as they lost four matches in straight sets. Adam Morgan lost to Daniel Murray, 2-6, 2-6 at #2, while Ben Lundell lost to Jeff Kivitz, 1-6, 2-6 at #3. Williams then closed out the match as Scott MacKenzie defeated the Gusties Brett Morse-Karzen, 6-0, 6-0 at #5 and Lex Urban defeated Kyle Anderson, 6-1, 6-1 at #6. The #1 and #3 singles matches were halted once Williams had claimed the decisive fourth point.
Gustavus ends it season at 27-7. Loren Collins will play in the singles championship and Adam Morgan and Brett Morse-Karzen will play in the doubles championship which begins on Saturday.
