ST. PETER, Minn. – After earning its first overtime victory of the season last night, the Gustavus Adolphus College women’s hockey team was unable to keep the ball rolling at home on Saturday, as it fell 2-0 to Saint Mary’s University at Don Roberts Ice Rink. With the loss, the Gusties fall to 8-9-4 overall and 7-4-3 in the MIAC, while the Cardinals improve to 7-11-3 overall and 6-6-2 in the league.

Paige Press kept Saint Mary's scoreless during her 39 minutes between the pipes for Gustavus.

Despite outshooting the Cardinals for the second day in a row, this time by a 30-24 mark, the Gusties were unable to score on Saint Mary’s netminder Tori Herrmann. The Cardinal goalie stopped all 30 shots that came her way in the full 60 minutes to pick up her first shutout of the season and her sixth overall win.

Saint Marys’ goals came within 3:07 of each other in the second period. Jane Hannula got the scoring going for the visitors at the 14:14 mark, scoring her second goal in as many days to give her team a 1-0 lead. Then, at the 17:21 mark, Cardinal forward McKenna Parent put Saint Mary’s up 2-0 with her seventh goal of the year. Gustie goalie Amanda DiNella (Fy., Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.) gave up both goals and suffered her eighth loss of the season. Paige Press (Fy., Cottage Grove, Minn.) came on to relieve DiNella and notched a shutout in 19 minutes played.

Despite the loss, Gustavus remains just two points out of first place in the MIAC standings behind the University of St. Thomas. Just three total points separate the first place Tommies and fifth place Bethel University, meaning the MIAC Regular Season Championship is still very much up for grabs with four more games left in the season for each team.

The Gusties resume competition next weekend when they take on Bethel University in a home-away series. Game one is Friday night at the Schwan Super Rink beginning at 7 p.m.
