ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s swimming and diving team placed second place out of six teams at the Grace Goblirsch Invitational that was held Saturday at the Vic Gustafson Pool. The Gusties tallied two first place finishes on the day, along with six second places to conclude the meet with a team score of 907, 239 points behind first place finisher Carthage College.

“The men swam very well today,” said Coach Jon Carlson. “We’re starting to get better and beginning to do the little things better, such as turns, starts, and finishes. We still have some work to do in those areas, but that’s one of the biggest things we’ve focused on and you could really see that coming through today in our swims.”

The Gusties’ Tanner Sonnek (Fy., North Mankato, Minn.) earned gold medal honors in the 100 breaststroke, and teammate Jacob Stern (Sr., Rosemount, Minn.) followed him with a second place showing in the same event. Stern also took home silver medal honors in the 500 freestyle. The Gustie divers had a nice showing Saturday as well, as Jonathan Bovee (Fy., Farmington, Minn.) earned two gold medals in the one and three meter dives, while counterpart Carson Scholberg (Fy., Apple Valley, Minn.) took second in the three.

“Tanner Sonnek had a nice meet winning the 100 breaststroke and getting under one minute, as did Jacob Stern who also got under one minute in the 100 breaststroke and had a great 500 as well,” said Carlson. “I’m very pleased with how they performed and I’m also happy with our divers. Jonathan Bovee won both the one and three meters, which helped us out a lot and I’m definitely excited with divers’ progress so far this season.”

Gustavus will compete next at the Jean Freeman Invitational at the University of Minnesota, which will be held December 4 and 5.
